I survived the climb to the top of Longonot.
I want that on a t-shirt.
What an incredible day! The entire Wheels team, minus two, hiked all the way up to the crater of Longonot, a dormant volcano in the Rift Valley. We then walked all the way around the crater, up to the highest point on the mountain, and then back down again.
Actually, it would be better described as walking up to the crater, than up and down and up and down and up and down and up and down and up to the highest point, then down and up and down and up and down and straight and up and down and down again to get back. Whew!
The trail was a mile and a half to the crater, two and a half miles around, and a mile and a half back down. Of course, the trail was almost never flat (because that would just be too easy). And the mountain air was thin. But we had a blast! We were nice and dirty when we got down, and my new hiking boots worked magnificently.
The high points of the day were getting to the top (pun completely intended) which was about 9000 ft, and seeing some wild giraffe and zebra! As Ben put it, his favorite part of the day was getting to the top, with a close second being getting to the bottom and being able to chug the jugs of water we brought in the vans. ;)
The rest of the day was composed of relaxing, dinner, and playing card games with the rest of the team. We’ve been talking about playing games almost every night this week, but this is the first night we’ve had time enough to do it!
It has been a good weekend. :) Kijabe is beautiful. We head back to Thika tomorrow after some birdwatching (for Luke, Mrs. Rispin and I) and church at RVA.
Hard to believe we arrived in Kenya only one week ago today! It’s been a very full but VERY satisfying week. We have high hopes for the next one as well!
